A Family Ski Lesson with Snozone in Castleford, West Yorkshire! - A Review

Last year we visited Snozone in Milton Keynes to experience a family sledging session. We saw some amazing skiing and snowboarding during our visit and we left extremely impressed with the facilities that were on offer. Before we had even left our sledging session, we had all agreed that we would love to return to Snozone in the future to enjoy a family skiing lesson.

This weekend the attraction launched their Snozone Summer of Snow Party, which provided us with the perfect opportunity to return and put our skiing skills to the test.  The party featured prizes, children's activities, freestyle demonstrations and special offers, as well as some FREE face painting and badge making. If that wasn't enough the restaurant was offering an amazing range of Tapas dishes, food and drink and Snozone had also teamed up with partners Andorra, Tog24 and Crystal Ski to provide both guests and members with some great deals.

Snozone is a family friendly attraction and snow sports facility. It currently has two venues in the UK with one being based in Castleford, West Yorkshire and the other in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Each site provides real snow slopes for skiing and snowboarding as well as offering snow experiences such as sledging and family snow play sessions, making it the ideal place to learn, develop and have some fun. They were also voted the Best Sporting Venue 2017/2018 by the School Travel Awards, for excelling in learning outside the classroom for school children.

We couldn't wait to visit again, though this time we chose to visit their Castleford site instead, which was 1 hour 25 minutes away from our home in North Wales. It was a really easy drive along the M62 and as we got closer, there were plenty of signs to show us where to exit. As soon as we left the motorway, we could see the huge Xscape building in the distance and the kids started to get really excited as we drove nearer.

On arrival, we were surprised to find that it was free parking. The Xscape building also houses many other entertainment venues and restaurants, so we were quite shocked that there was no charge to park. We made our way through the main entrance and followed the overhead signs to Snozone, where we were then welcomed at the reception desk.

We provided our reference number and the Snozone representative brought up our booking details. She told us the name of our instructor and wrote down our clothing sizes so that she could go and get some appropriate warm ski wear for us. You can bring your own ski clothing or you can hire it for a cost of £9.99 per person. Due to hygiene reasons, you must provide your own socks and gloves, but should you forget these, then they are available to purchase from the Snozone shop. This can obviously increase the cost of your visit though, so its best to try and remember to bring them with you.

Once we had collected all our clothing, we made our way over to the changing rooms. There are numerous individual changing cubicles, along with a further two communal changing areas for males and females with toilets. We chose to use the individual cubicles which were located next to the lockers, where you could leave your possessions for safe keeping. These required a £1 coin, but this was refundable.

Now that we had our clothing on, we headed to the equipment hire desk where we were provided with boots. I would recommend going one size up to your usual shoe size for comfort as they are very tight fitting. You are advised to only wear one boot to begin with, as you then return to the desk with your other boot so that the skis can be adjusted to fit. I will be honest, I found the process of getting all my gear on quite a challenge and the instructor ended up helping me fasten my boots in the end. Luckily he was lovely and was more than happy to help.

The booking confirmation advises to arrive 45 minutes before a ski lesson and initially I thought that this was a very lengthy amount of time, but really it was actually extremely accurate. We arrived at 9:45 and were only just ready in time for our lesson start time of 10:30 so I would definitely say that you need to make sure you follow the information provided to ensure that you have plenty of time to get all kitted out.

Our instructor Adam, had already found us at the waiting benches whilst we were getting our boots on and our first impressions of him were great. He introduced himself to all the children and took note of everyones names. He asked a couple of questions about which members of our family had been skiing before and how confident we were. In turn I asked him a couple of questions too about how long he had been teaching for and when he first started skiing. I also explained to him that I had a fear of heights and of hurting myself, so was probably going to be a terrible student to teach. Adam was really reassuring though and rather than just laugh at me, he did his absolute best to encourage me right from start to finish. If I could have hand picked an instructor, he would definitely have been my choice. Great with the kids, patient, knowledgeable and friendly.

We waddled out to the nursery slope, I say waddled and that's because we all took a bit of time to adapt to the heavy boots, as well as carrying the skis. Once we were on the flat, we were shown how to clip into the skis and began with attaching just one ski to the boot. We then got used to them by going up and down on the flat imitating riding a scooter, to get used to the sensation of the skis gliding on the snow. My five year old son Riley had been very nervous prior to the start of the session, but he was absolutely loving it as he slid along the snow.

Our next step was to get clipped into both skis and then slide across the straight. Ben, Emma and Mr F have all been skiing before, but this was a completely new experience for Riley and I. It took a little bit of getting used to, though somehow I managed to maintain my balance. Once we had mastered the fine art of sliding, we were then shown how to open and close the skis in order to add some control to our movement. We were only approximately 20 minutes into the session when we went half way up the nursery slope and made a gentle slide down. The rest of my family found this super easy, but I will admit that I was so worried about taking a tumble.

Once everyone had accomplished that step, it was time to make our way to the top of the nursery slope. Again everyone but me found this remarkably easy, as you simply had to hold onto a rope which then pulled you to the top of the slope. I managed to hold the rope fine, but my release wasn't the most perfect and I needed the help of trusty Adam to get me to the flat section at the top.

Adam then explained that he would go down the slope with each of us one at time, so that we could get a feel for it first. I was amazed at how comfortable Riley was with Adam and was so proud when he made his first attempt to ski down the snow. The smile on his face once he had done this was fantastic and certainly a memory I will treasure.

As our family grew in confidence Ben, Emma and Mr F all made their way down the slope unaided numerous times gaining a little more speed and control on each occasion. Mr F did slightly misjudge one attempt though and ended up in a heap alongside the crash barrier, but this was all good fun and he was able to laugh it off and get straight back up to try again. Practice makes perfect as they say!

Towards the end of the session, Adam lay some cones out on the slope and my family took it in turns to steer around the cones with the skis and control the direction that they wanted to go. Ben in particular seemed to find this really easy and I was amazed when Riley also managed to do this too, with the added help of the instructor. I was so impressed with the skills that all my children showed during just a one hour session, it was definitely a proud mum moment.

The hour lesson had literally flown by and we all really enjoyed it. As we returned our ski equipment to the hire desk, Adam filled in some ski lesson cards and ticked off each skill that we had managed to achieve during the lesson. You can bring this card with you to any subsequent lessons and each time you complete a section it can be signed off by the instructor. I thought that this was a really good idea, as it makes it clear what you are capable of, but also what skills you need to achieve in the future.

We thanked Adam for his time and made our way back to the changing rooms to get back into our normal clothes. Despite the fact it is cold on the slopes, we were all really hot due to the amount of exercise we had just done, so it is clearly a great way to keep fit too! I later learnt that you can burn up to 400 calories an hour on skis or a snowboard. We were all thirsty so went to purchase some drinks before continuing to enjoy some of the other activities that were available.

We made our way up to the restaurant, where a lovely lady called Jill was offering free face painting for the children. She had some pictures available that you could choose from, but Riley had decided that he wanted to be Gecko from PJ Masks. Rather than just say no, Jill very kindly brought up a picture on her phone instead and used that for an idea to paint Riley's face. I thought that this was really kind of her and Riley was absolutely delighted. Emma then opted to have a snake and Ben chose a shark, both of which were fantastic.

Next to the face painting table, there was another area to make some badges. This was being ran by Louise who again was absolutely lovely with the children. Throughout the whole day, we were all made to feel so welcome and my kids really enjoyed doing this activity with Louise. There was a selection of pens, stamps and crayons to help create your chosen design and it was a really fun thing to do to end our day.

The restaurant had a great selection of food and drink on offer and in addition to the normal choices, there was also a fantastic tapas menu, that the chef had put together specifically for the Summer of Snow party. This was £16 for 6 dishes which were designed for two people to enjoy together. We had eaten a large breakfast that morning, so we were not hungry enough to sample this, which is a shame as the food smelt absolutely delicious and we would have loved to have tried this out.

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic day at the Snozone Summer of Snow Party and despite our lesson only being an hour long, we spent a total of four hours there enjoying the surroundings and activities. There is a large picture window in the upstairs restaurant so it was nice to observe some wonderful skiers making their way down the slopes. It is a really family friendly venue and all the staff that we met were brilliant with the children which is always reassuring. Our skiing lesson was really enjoyable and I couldn't have wished for a better instructor.

A lot of people may consider skiing or snowboarding to be a Winter activity only, but if anything Summer is the ideal time to learn, due to it being a quieter season. It is a great way to stay fit and active and due to the fact that Snozone are open 364 days a year, it makes it a great all year round activity to enjoy as a family or as an individual. My children are now keen to progress their skills, so there is no doubt that we will be returning to Snozone very very soon!

A Family Sledging Experience at Snozone Milton Keynes

After our exciting time at iFLY Indoor Skydiving at Xscape Milton Keynes, we were very happy to be returning the following day to experience another attraction situated in the same great building. This time we were heading to Snozone to enjoy a family sledging session and it was something we were all really looking forward to!

Earlier this year Mr F, Emma, Ben and my stepson Liam all travelled out to the World Ski Championships in St Moritz, where they had their first experience of skiing and snowboarding. For Emma and Ben it was the first time that they had ever actually had the chance to go sledging and play in real snow. Whilst there they also had the opportunity to have some sledging fun on the Swiss Airlines course and so they couldn't wait to visit Snozone to do it again.

My youngest son Riley has never experienced snow at all and the last time we had a slight covering of snow was the day after he was born back in January 2013. It was therefore really exciting to see what he thought of the snow and whether he would enjoy it.

Snozone is a family friendly attraction and it currently has two venues in the UK with one being based in Castleford, West Yorkshire and the other in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. We visited the Milton Keynes Snozone which provides real snow slopes for skiing and snowboarding as well as offering snow experiences such as tubing, sledging and family snow play sessions. The main slope is 170 metres in length and is covered by more the 1500 tonnes of real snow, making it the ideal place to learn, develop and have some fun!

We made the booking for our sledging session over the phone and soon after I received both a text message and email confirming our booking. There was a lot of additional information attached to the booking which I took the time to read through the following day. It is very important to read the complete booking confirmation as this tells you all about the arrival time, cancellation policy, slope rules, clothing and equipment hire, medical conditions, the supervision of children and the consumption of food and beverages to name but a few. Our email stated to arrive approximately one hour before our sledging time to ensure that we were all booked in, kitted out and ready to start at 11am promptly.

Snozone is well signposted from the main roads and very easy to find. There is plenty of pay and display parking available and the price for parking varies dependent on your length of stay. However, we found the costs to be very reasonable and from memory it cost us around £3 to park for the duration of our activity. Our children already had clothing suitable for the slopes, so they got ready in the car park before entering, simply putting their ski gear over the top of their normal clothes, however there were large changing room facilities inside.

My husband was also well prepared, which left only me to get sorted with some hire clothing. I had read online that clothing hire was £9.99 however, I was pleased to find that this is for skiing and snowboarding. For a summer sledging session this is only £3.50 which I thought was very reasonable. For hygiene reasons you cannot hire gloves or socks so these are a must to bring with you or alternatively you can buy them on the day from Snozone for £19.95. This could obviously prove very costly if you need them for your whole family, so I would definitely recommend bringing your own with you. You also need to make sure you have suitable footwear for sledging so my children wore snow boots and wellies which were both absolutely fine on the snow and gave good grip.

We arrived one hour before our sledging session and a very friendly gentleman checked us in on reception. We were provided with our tickets which we were told to hand in once we met our instructor at 11am. I also requested to hire some clothing and was provided with a further ticket that I could hand in to the clothing desk to exchange for some salopettes (I already had a jacket). The check in process was very quick and easy and once this had been completed we had 40 minutes to spare so had a quick look around the surrounding shops and restaurants. About 15 minutes before our session was due to start I went to get changed and we placed our valuables in one of the lockers which cost £1 and is refundable. We then made our way to the equipment area and found some helmets for each of us. The helmets varied in size so the kids had to try a couple on to make sure they had a helmet with the best fit for them, but there were plenty available so more than enough for all the guests.

Once 11am arrived we were met by Andy who took all of our tickets and led us through to the slope. The whole area was much larger than I had expected and I was surprised by just how great it was. It was a chilly -5 degrees celsius once inside, however because we were constantly moving I never actually felt cold at any point. I watched a few people fly down the slopes on their skis and was very impressed with the whole set up.

We were then led to an area which had been sectioned off on part of the slope which is where the sledging could safely take place. This was away from the skiers and snowboarders and meant that we wouldn't get in anyone elses way and vice versa. The sledging slope was plenty high enough for us and I was a bit worried that Riley would find it too high initially, but he was absolutely fine and we quickly grabbed our sledges and made our way up to the top of the sledging slope.

Riley was so excited to be playing in the snow and wasted no time getting stuck in and having a good play in between sledges. He enjoyed climbing and rolling around in it as well as making the obligatory snow angel! Each time we climbed to the top and then sled down to the bottom he would have a little play in the snow and it was lovely to see him so excited and happy.

As there were a few other people in our group, I didn't let him sledge down the full slope on his own, as you needed to be able to stop and steer away from other people, if need be. I therefore sled down next to him each time and held on to both mine and his sled in order to keep us together. This was really easy to do and was definitely a lot safer for him. I wasn't too keen on going overly fast so the slightly slower speed of going down together was much better for me too.

Emma, Ben and Mr F on the other hand, took great delight in speeding down the slope and seeing who could get to the bottom first. The sledges look really small but are actually suprisingly comfy and easy to carry to the top. The walking to the top can get a bit exhausting after a while but there is plenty of space at the bottom of the slope to have a rest if you need to, before climbing the hill again which certainly gets your muscles working and calories burning.

Ben was definitely the fastest down the slopes and beat each one of us to the bottom when we raced. He had loved his time in St Moritz back in February so he had been really looking forward to being able to play in the snow again. He couldn't help but admire some of the skiers, as they went flying past and I think he would have definitely liked to have given skiing another try, as this was something he picked up really quickly in Switzerland. We are definitely going to have a look into getting him some lessons arranged, or perhaps, a short course which Snozone offer at both of their sites. I was also pleased to find out from Andy that they offer both private, group and family tuition as well as day courses and summer camps for children.

Ben and Mr F quickly got the hang of steering the sledges whilst going down the slope and also managed to do a few little twists and turns. Ben loved racing his dad to the bottom which often resulted in them both lying laughing on the floor, it was so much fun!

About three quarters of the way into our session Emma and quite a few others decided to take a little break at the bottom as walking to the top began to get pretty tiring. Riley however was still shouting "Again Again!" each time we got to the bottom so I had to try and find the energy to keep getting back to the top although I think my walk up got much slower each time.

We had initially thought that an hour wasn't very long for sledging, but we were very wrong and it was actually just the right length of time for us all, as we each began to get a little tired. We could see the large cafe calling us through the giant viewing windows and so as soon as the session was over we returned our helmets and then made our way through to the cafe to have a well deserved rest and a drink.

The cafe offered a nice selection of food and drinks as well as a range of ice creams. Emma and Ben both chose a slushy and Riley chose an ice cream whilst both Mr F and I enjoyed a nice hot drink. Once Riley had finished his ice cream he was also able to enjoy the under 5's soft play area. This isn't huge but it is great for little ones to have somewhere to go whilst you have a rest and finish your meal and beverages.

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic time at Snozone Milton Keynes and will definitely be returning again in the future for a family ski or snowboard lesson. The staff were friendly and approachable and we found all aspects of the attraction to be very clean and tidy including the cafe and soft play area. The sledging session was great and very enjoyable as well as being a great opportunity to introduce Riley to the fun you can have in snow. We will definitely be back!

Indoor Skydiving with iFLY Milton Keynes - A Review

Last week we enjoyed a few peaceful and relaxing days in the Lake District which were really lovely, but this week we decided to step it up a gear and enjoy some thrilling and adventurous activities in Milton Keynes. We combined this with a camping trip at the Gulliver's Camping and Caravan Site near Willen Lake and had a great few days trying out some fun new experiences.

Our first stop was the fabulous iFLY which is an indoor skydiving centre that recreates the simulation of true free-fall conditions within a vertical wind tunnel. There are currently three iFLY locations in the UK which are Milton Keynes, Manchester and Basingstoke and each location welcomes flyers of all abilities and offers highly trained instructors.

My husband has always wanted to try a parachute jump and so this was a great chance for him to experience what free-fall would be like without the need to pay a small fortune and jump out of a plane. My daughter Emma is also very adventurous so this was right up her street and she had been counting down the days to her experience. If you are a regular reader of the blog you will also know that my son Ben has a fear of heights and so this was something that was way out of his comfort zone, but he was willing to give it a go and I was very proud of the fact that he was happy to try it out.

Shortly after booking our experience a few weeks ago, we received a confirmation email that provided our ticket along with lots of useful information relevant to our visit. You need to print your ticket off and bring the hard copy with you when booking in on the day, so make sure you don't forget this! There is also a section that explains about completing your 'Statement of Risk' which all flyers need to complete before participating. It is recommended that you do this prior to your visit in order to help speed up the check in process on the day and it only takes a few moments to do this online. Another important factor to make note of is your report time which will be approximately an hour before your actual flight time.

We visited the Milton Keynes site which is located within the Xscape building. It was really easy to find and well signposted from the main road. There was plenty of parking (pay and display) and it was a short walk once entering the building to the iFLY facility. Before we entered we watched a couple of videos that were on display in the window and also on the self check in tablets opposite the entrance, just to reassure Ben a little bit more about what the experience would involve.

We approached reception and were immediately made to feel welcome by the staff. It was apparent from the beginning that the staff all possess a friendly and professional attitude and the gentleman who checked us in explained the procedure to us, went over our statement of risks and told us where the viewing chamber was if we wanted to view any flights whilst waiting. He told us who our instructor was going to be and where to meet him, then once we had finished checking in we were told that we had around twenty minutes to grab a drink or have a look around before the session began.

We returned just before 4pm and were met by our instructor Darren. He invited all the flyers in the 4pm group into the safety briefing room and also invited family members to come in too if we wanted to. As Riley can get a little noisy and bored in classroom environments, I took the opportunity to take him to the loo and then have a good look around the iFLY facility whilst Mr F, Emma and Ben took part in the briefing, so as not to disturb them or anybody else.

Afterwards, Emma excitedly told me that they had watched a short DVD which went through the process of the experience, the hand signals to use, the entry and exit procedure and what to do if you needed to end the flight for a particular reason. There was then a visual demonstration on the correct flying position which Mr F volunteered to help demonstrate. Once the safety briefing was completed the group then made there way to the Gear Up counter to get kitted out in their clothing which consisted of a flying suit, goggles, safety helmet and ear plugs. Everyone excitedly put their fly suits on which just fitted neatly over the top of your ordinary clothes and once the instructor was satisfied that everyone had their helmets and goggles on correctly, the group made their way up to the flight chamber.

The Milton Keynes iFLY flight chamber features a 12ft diameter design and has wind speeds reaching up to 165mph.  The group who were flying entered an air locked chamber whilst spectators could sit on the opposite side on benches placed around the wind tunnel so that you had a good view of everything that was happening. The instructor Darren then went over a few final things and checked that everyone remembered the hand signals and then a second instructor joined us who sat in the booth that controlled the wind speed. Ben had become quite nervous by this point so he sat the opposite end of the entry door to the chamber so that he could go last after he had watched all of the other participants.

Each member of the group had 2 x 1 minute flights to enjoy and whilst this may sound like a short amount of time, my husband said it definitely doesn't feel it. This flying time is also equivalent to 3 x 12,000 ft skydives. My family patiently waited whilst everyone else took their turn, it then got to Emma's go and she was so excited. I think she was a little shocked initially by the wind speed but soon got the hang of it and managed to manoeuvre herself into the correct body position with the help of the instructor. She absolutely loved flying around the chamber and seemed to pick it up really quickly.

When it came to Mr F's go, he found it a little harder than he expected. The videos make it look so easy so I think he had thought that he was going to enter the chamber and soar like an eagle which definitely wasn't the case. It was really funny watching him try to get the right position and the instructor was fantastic trying to help him. He really enjoyed it and found his first flight a little hard but quite hilarious.

Last but not least was Ben who did absolutely fantastic despite his nerves. He had paid attention to everything that the instructor had told him and got into a great flight position with ease. He managed to go slightly higher than some of the other participants and flew really well. He made the slight mistake though of looking down as he exited the chamber and as you can see right down the chamber through the net it brought his fear of heights to the surface again. He had an amazing time during his flight and did really enjoy it, but he ultimately decided that one go was enough for him and decided not to participate in the second flight. Darren the instructor was absolutely brilliant with him and gave him lots of encouragement to try and persuade him, but he totally respected his decision and didn't push him to do anything he didn't want to. As a parent I really appreciated this approach and I was so proud of the fact that he had done the first flight.

Each member of the group then enjoyed a second flight and due to our instructor being very experienced, he was also able to offer participants the added extra of the Hi-Fly experience which is where you get to go higher in the chamber and spin around with the help of the instructor. This does carry an additional cost of £6 which I think is very reasonable. This added extra isn't offered at the time of booking as it is dependent on the experience and qualifications of the instructor you have which can of course vary depending on the day or time of your visit. It is optional so there is no obligation to do it if you don't want to, but should you choose to then you just pay the £6 at the reception desk once the experience has finished.

Emma didn't need to think twice about going up, she was that excited she actually ran into the chamber and leaped into a superman pose. I think the instructor could see that she was very comfortable flying and had no fear so he spun her round really high into the chamber and Emma absolutely loved it!

Mr F opted not to go higher on his second flight and instead chose to spend more time flying low and mastering the correct position to fly in. He did much better on his second attempt and managed to fly around the chamber a lot more comfortably, even managing a smile and a wave for Riley.

Once all the flights had been completed it was time for a special treat as Darren the instructor entered the flight chamber on his own and put on a great display of what is actually possible with a lot of practice and experience. My children were fascinated at the speed he could travel as well as all the tricks and spins he could do. Riley even asked me if he was the real Spiderman!

After this, we all returned back to the main reception area where all the clothing and equipment was returned to the Gear Up counter. We initially thought that the experience would end here, however it was a nice surprise to find that the instructor actually sat all the participants down and provided feedback to each member of the group. I thought that this was a great idea and would actually encourage visitors to come back again and improve. It also gave Emma and Ben a big confidence boost when they were both told how well they did in the flight chamber. Each participant was then also given a certificate which highlighted the areas they had covered and also gave you a bit of an insight into what more you could do if you returned again to try and progress. Emma has already requested that she has another flight during the summer holidays and would also like an iFLY birthday party!

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic experience both as participants and spectators. The facility is fantastic and the instructors and staff are a credit to the company. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived and every staff member we came across were very polite and courteous and able to answer any questions that we had. The attraction was very clean and well organised and despite being busy it didn't feel crowded at any point during our time there. The iFLY experience is brilliant and once I have recovered from my knee injury, both Riley and I have also decided to give it a go too so we will definitely be booking another family experience in the near future.
